Applying Smokey Eye Shadow

Smokey eye shadow is hot these days. Women are using it for both day and night makeup looks. Although the smokey eye look for day is modified, the look is not just for nighttime alone.

Smokey eye shadow can be used to create the smoky eye look or it can be used for a basic shadow application. Either way there are some tips to remember when applying smokey eye shadow. Minor changes in the way you apply the shadow will take you from day to night.

Smoky eye shadow comes in a variety of colors and has a matte finish. If you just want a basic look, simply apply some smokey eye shadow on the lid only. For an even barer look, use the smokey eye shadow as a liner only.

How To Use Smokey Eye Shadow As A Liner

To use smoky eye shadow as a liner, use an angled eyebrow brush or an actual eyeliner brush; whichever you are handy with. Apply the shadow as a liner on the upper lashes only. Use the smokey eye shadow dry for a more muted effect, or wet for a more intense look, both of which are completely appropriate for daytime wear. Be careful to use a color that works with your skin coloring and hair color. If you are very fair skinned and have light hair, this effect can look too harsh on you.

Create A Complete Smokey Eye Look

To use smokey eye shadow to create a smokey eye look, first cover the eyelid with shadow and blend up into the crease. Again, take your angled brow brush or eyeliner brush and apply the shadow as a liner, wet or dry. My favorite method is to use a very short tipped crease brush to brush a very muted, but rather thick, line under my bottom lashes. Try your application a few different ways to be sure of what looks best on you. If you get your shadow a bit dark, you can use some loose face powder to lighten it up; just pat a bit on.

If you’d like, you can use eyeliner along the top lash line and inside the bottom lash line. If you will be using eyeliner, try a dark color, but not necessarily black. Vary the colors a bit by using a dark violet or a charcoal grey. Finish your smoky eye look with lots of black mascara.

Varying Your Look

Variations of the smokey eye look can be used for just about anyone. The look traditionally calls for very dark smokey eye shadow, but slightly lighter colors can be used if you are very fair skinned. Sometimes the trick is to go with a lighter shadow and keep the liner and the mascara very dark. Using these few smokey eyeshadow techniques, you can create a great smokey eye look for day or evening wear. Experimenting with the look can be great fun, so give it a try. Don’t be afraid to mix colors and make mistakes. After all, it will wash off.
